Warning Signs at Outlets and Switches
Outlets and switches often give early warning before a serious electrical problem. Learn the signs and what to do when you see them.
Request an electricianScorch marks
Brown or black marks around the slots mean the outlet has overheated.

Warm or hot covers
Outlets and switches shouldn't feel warm. Heat points to a loose connection or overload.
Buzzing or crackling
Sounds from an outlet or switch can mean arcing. Turn off that circuit at the panel.
Loose plugs
Plugs that fall out mean worn contacts that can overheat.
Sparks
A small spark when plugging in can be normal; larger or repeated sparks aren't.
Burning smells
Any burning plastic smell needs immediate attention. Turn off the circuit if safe and get help.
What not to do
Don't keep using a damaged outlet, and don't cover it up with furniture.
Get it fixed

Outdoor outlets
Outdoor outlets face rain, snow and meltwater. A cracked cover or an outlet that trips its GFCI every time it rains needs replacing with a weather-resistant one.
Dimmers and switches
Dimmer switches can feel slightly warm in normal use, especially with older bulbs, but they shouldn't be hot to the touch. A switch that is hot, discoloured or makes a buzzing sound needs replacing.
Cords and adapters
Many outlet problems start with what's plugged in: damaged cords, cheap multi-plug adapters, or power strips daisy-chained together. Replace damaged cords and plug major appliances directly into the wall.
Childproofing
Tamper-resistant outlets have shutters that block objects from being pushed into the slots. They're required in new homes and are an easy upgrade in older ones with young children.
