Nine Mile Falls at a glance
Nine Mile Falls is an unincorporated community straddling the Spokane River about nine miles northwest of downtown Spokane, in both Spokane and Stevens counties. It's an exurb rather than a suburb, beyond the edge of the built-up area.
What that means for your electrical
Homes here are more rural: wells, septic systems, long driveways and outbuildings. A well pump that stops in an outage means no water, so a generator and transfer switch are common requests. See generators.
Trees and lines
Forested lots along Nine Mile Road and the river are beautiful, but falling limbs take down service drops in windstorms. After a storm, never touch a downed line; report it to the utility and have an electrician check any damage on your side.
Power from the start
The community grew up around Nine Mile Dam, built in 1908 by Spokane industrialist Jay P. Graves to power his streetcar system. Long before that, the Spokane people lived here, and Spokane House was set up at the confluence of the Spokane and Little Spokane rivers in 1810. Riverside homes and cabins may have older wiring from seasonal use; see rewiring older homes.
