Spokane Valley at a glance
Spokane Valley is the largest suburb of Spokane, with 102,976 people at the 2020 census, making it the ninth-most populous city in Washington. Locals know it simply as "The Valley." It lies along both banks of the Spokane River, east of Spokane and west of Coeur d'Alene, and surrounds the city of Millwood on three sides.
What that means for your electrical
The city was formed in 2003 from older communities such as Dishman, Opportunity, Trentwood and Veradale, so homes range from post-war houses with small panels to new subdivisions. Older homes adding heat pumps, EV chargers or shop circuits often find their 100-amp service is already near its limit. See panel upgrades.
Summer heat, winter cold
July averages around 73°F and January around 28°F, so homes here need both cooling and heating. As more households replace older furnaces and window units with heat pumps, the electrical side of the switch matters. See heat pump circuits.
A record-setting city
When Spokane Valley incorporated on March 31, 2003, it was the third-largest newly incorporated city in US history. It hosts the Spokane County Interstate Fair and Valleyfest and is home ground for the Spokane Indians. Shelley Lake and Saltese Creek lie within the city. Homes with workshops, RV hookups and detached garages are common here, and each usually needs its own properly protected circuit or subpanel.
